Arriving at her 26th birthday party in a show-stopping, revealing dress, Cheryl Cole was pretty much guaranteed to be the centre of attention.
Partying at Vanilla private members club in London, the Girls Aloud singer pulled out all the stops in a £4,000 daring sheer, fringed mini-dress by British designer Alexander McQueen.
But Cheryl couldn’t have anticipated being upstaged by her own mother Joan Callaghan, 49, who forwent knickers for the occasion.
Escorted by footballer husband Ashley Cole, Cheryl teamed the dress with £495 Christian Louboutin nude patent prive slingback heels.
The Coles and Joan joins a host of the singer’s celebrity pals at the party, including Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue and Girls Aloud bandmembers Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts.
But by the end of the night, it was Joan who was causing the biggest stir among the assembled paparazzi as her desperation to keep up with the young ones became all too obvious.
Keen to show her still-petite figure in a sweatshirt grey bandeau dress, the 49-year-old unwisely decided to step out without any underwear. If she were worried about VPL – visible panty line – surely a thong would have provided adequate cover.
However, it appears she has followed the increasing trend often adopted by younger celebrities for dispensing with underwear altogether.
Quite what Cheryl will think about her mother’s youthful behaviour is anybody’s guess.
After enjoying a meal with Ashley and her mum Joan at the Mayfair Hotel, the trio got a taxi to the Fitzrovia club for Cheryl’s big bash.
As she was helped out of the taxi by Ashley, 28, Cheryl gave onlookers as flash of her rose and thorns tattoo around her right thigh as she climbed out of the car.
She had clearly gone to some trouble to get ready for her big night out.
Instead of her usual Rapunzel like hair extensions, Cheryl pulled her hair back into a tight bun and had a long ponytail hanging down over her exposed chest.
After being stuck at work on The X Factor live auditions in Birmingham on her actual birthday on Tuesday, Cheryl decide to mark her big day with a star-studded party last night.
She was joined by her fellow X Factor judges Simon, Louis Walsh and Dannii.
While Louis arrived alone, Dannii brought boyfriend Kris Smith and Simon set tongues wagging by bringing ex-girlfriend Terri Seymour.
Simon had previously attended the launch of Beth Ditto’s fashion collection at Evans in Oxford Street with retail tycoon Sir Philip Green and his wife Lady Tina.
Helping Cheryl to celebrate were two of her Girls Aloud bandmates Kimberley and Nicola.
Fresh from her recent Caribbean holiday, Kimberley, 27, flashed her tanned legs in a fuchsia mini-dress.
Nicola, 23, complemented her red hair with a frilly green dress as she arrived with her boyfriend Charlie Fennell.
However, Sarah Harding and Nadine Coyle were conspicuously absent.
Two of Cheryl’s protegees from the last series of X Factor turned out to party with their mentor – winner Alexandra Burke, 20, and Diana Vickers, 17.
Also representing the X Factor crew was The Xtra Factor presenter Holly Willoughby and her husband Dan Baldwin and Emma Bunton, who helped Dannii pick her final three contestants.
Just seven weeks after giving birth to her son Harry, Holly looked like she had already lost her baby weight as she showed off her figure in a zebra-print dress.
Also enjoying a night off parenting was Emma and partner Jade Jones, who have a 23-month-old son Beau.
Cheryl’s big birthday bash was in stark contrast to last year’s celebrations.
After being surprised by Ashley with flowers and a gift at the X Factor auditions last year, Cheryl enjoyed a quiet meal with her mum Joan and Ashley.
While last year’s birthday may have been overshadowed by allegations of Ashley’s infidelity, this year Cheryl is in a much happier place.
In the past year, Cheryl has carved out a successful TV career on The X Factor, won a Brit Award for Best Single with Girls Aloud and signed a solo record deal.
